So the new movie Serenity has inspired at least one of my Whedon-rabid deadbeat blogger friends to post. I still haven’t seen the flick. In fact, I haven’t even seen the Firefly series in its entirety, although last weekend I finally saw the pilot and a couple of episodes. What I saw was really impressive. The tone is more adult than his previous outings, in good ways. It’s visually stunning - the combination of western, Chinese, and space elements is at once familiar and fresh. The Jossian dialogue is still there. I think it is actually my favorite show that I’ve seen of his - the characters are very rich and layered and real. It has an “ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances” vibe that I really enjoyed.
I also appreciate the way Whedon is unafraid to portray healthy relationships in his series. Sure, you have to have the soap opera drama too. But Buffy had Willow and Tara, and Serenity has Zoe and Wash - the first time in a looong time that I have seen a functional married couple on a TV show who have cool points to spare - they’re neither geeky nor saccharine nor cruel to each other, at least not in the episodes that I’ve seen. Kudos.
(And the movie website is a sweet piece of flash work, I must say, although I find it somewhat hard to navigate.)
All that is to say that I’m looking forward to seeing it, although I have no idea when that will be.
And I really wish I could get the damn theme song out of my head.
YOU MUST see the entire show before seeing the movie. I’ve watched them all again (in proper order) and it’s made me really ready for the movie (which I haven’t seen yet)….
Seriously, rent the DVDs. I just bought them, so maybe you can borrow mine.
