About

Miss Piggy is my feminist idol.

When I was in high school, I saw a production of Verdi’s Rigoletto at HGO. Gilda was played by an artist named Maureen O’Flynn, and her aria (Caro nome) was the first time in my life I have shed tears at the sheer beauty of something. I cried, my mom cried, and it was just because her voice was so pure and sweet and vibrant. I just couldn’t help it.

For the longest time, the only recording I could find with her on it was a version of Verdi’s Falstaff. Now it looks like over the past four years, she has started performing as an integral part of a project called Operatica. It is a fusion of electronica and opera, which has a lot of musical potential. The first foray I ever heard into that concept was the diva in The Fifth Element (which was phenomenal, both the movie and the music), and it is great to know that artists are exploring the blending of these two musical styles further. I am pretty intrigued. I will definitely have to check it out - has anyone heard these before?
