Mickey Mouse is 75

I know all the arguments that Mickey is as much a symbol of crass consumerism and commericalized childhood. And I can see validity in some of them. But for me, that doesn’t change the fact that Mickey makes me smile, and always has. And I have to say that in the brief time I worked retail for Disney, the corporate culture there on a grunt level really impressed me. They have a real talent for customer service (and image, which is both good and bad).

I think that Micky also symbolizes much of what is good in our culture. The organization is fantastic. It emphasizes, in general, family values and family fun. The theme parks are visited mostly by famlies and the movies are, for the most part, family friendly. If you overlook the commercial aspect, much love comes over. It also employes many people and sets a high standard for work. So there doubters.
