About

I think I was a matryoshka doll in a previous life.

I saw Star Wars last night. Episode II, I mean. My verdict? *sigh*. I enjoyed it. I didn’t think it was good. There’s a difference. The STORY is good. And it is visually stunning. But … the magic of the original trilogy isn’t there. The characters, with the exception of Obi-Wan, didn’t impress me. Portman is flat and colorless. Christensen did an okay job. There was NO chemistry between them, however, which made the love scenes painful to sit through. Yoda, R2, Kenobi, and Mace saved the movie for me.

I think that Charles said it best:

“I look at these movies this way - they’re not great writing. Lucas came up with (combined several former myths to derive) a big-picture story that’s powerful. every character is tragic or menacing (except the droids) and there’s mythic-level themes. unfortunately he sucks at the little-picture writing and even the directing (Natalie Portman’s been incredible in other movies) but creates the great visual sequences that keep short attention spans returning. so I enjoy them on the “enjoyable” level (kinda like The Mummy or Mortal Kombat) and the big-picture story level (putting the puzzle together) - I guess the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”

Amen.
